SCHEDULE

Lecture:   Wednesday, 18:00-21:00

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course covers the fundamentals of crystallography and diffraction. Key concepts in the atomic structure and bonding of solids such as metals, ceramics, and semiconductors. Symmetry operations, point and space groups, lattice types, the structure factor, simple and complex inorganic compounds, structure/property comparisons, structure determination with X-ray diffraction, interpretation of experimental diffraction patterns. Ionic, covalent, metallic bonding compared with physical properties. Atomic and molecular orbitals, bands verses bonds, free electron theory. Characterization of nanomaterials using synchrotron x-ray sources. Introduction to synchrotron sources, x-ray interaction with matter, structural determination using scattering techniques and x-ray imaging techniques.
